Today, we saw the epic conclusion to the 8-part comedy murder mystery series from Apple TV+, The Afterparty. We finally found out who killed Xavier! Were you shocked by the reveal? If so, then you probably missed these details. Here are 5 things that lead us to the truth about our killer, Yasper, the whole show.

*All quotes from fans were received before the finale aired; these were their pre-finale theories.*

  1. THE USE OF THE COLOR GREEN

We all know that Yasper was envious of how Xavier’s life turned out. He wanted to be the star and he felt like he deserved the spotlight. With green being the classic color representation of envy, we see the color green used in relation to Yasper more than anyone. His phone case (another hint!) is green with gold handwriting. His rental car is green. His jacket is green. Even the lighting in some of his musical numbers is green! This could have been a red herring, but it turned out to be a true clue the whole time.

  1. HIS PROFESSION IN A/V INSTALLATION

Many fans of the show started to get suspicious of Yasper after they learned he was the one who installed Xavier’s security system. Says Twitter user @spidermannwh, “Yasper has full access to the security system. That’s the perfect position to be in if you want to commit a crime without anyone knowing.” Twitter user @tedlqsso hit the nail on the head about how Yasper deleted the security footage, “Yasper’s phone is silver with a green case with his name on it. Xavier’s is black without a case. When the cops are trying to access the footage, Yasper is ‘tweeting’ on a black caseless phone.” He was also able to play the ska video to distract everyone from Xavier’s fall. He was truly the only character to have the means to pull something like this off.

  1. “THREE DOTS FROM STARDOM”

This whole song basically lays out Yasper’s entire motive, but specific lines prove to carry a little bit more weight than just a catchy song about his jealousy. “My whole future’s in his fingertips / Will I be a superstar?” clearly states that Yasper has the most to gain AND lose from his relationship to Xavier. The other characters simply did not have enough motive! The end of the song has also become pretty eerie to me the more I listened to it, “The only thing standing in my way is this / Ellipsis.” We also see in this song how Yasper’s emotions can get the best of him, especially when they are emotions about his future and self-worth.

  1. HE’S A FAN FAVORITE

The reveal of Yasper as the killer might be a shock to some viewers simply because he is such a likable character. Twitter user @spidermannwh stated that she thought Yasper was the killer because “he would shock the audience. Yasper is so damn likable that it makes me think that it’s all just a veil for something much more sinister. Ben Schwartz has masterfully brought an abundance of charm and charisma to this role so it would be a bombshell to find out Yasper isn’t so amiable after all.” With his musical breaks, hilarious jokes, and his sweet friendship with Aniq, how could he be the killer?

  1. HIS EAGERNESS TO HELP ANIQ

One of Yasper’s major storylines is how he’s helping Aniq seemingly clear his name. Danner suspects Aniq so heavily that Aniq freaks out and wonders how he can prove his innocence. And who’s by his side the whole time? Yasper. Twitter user @moraleslyman said, “I think the killer is Yasper because he’s been inside the investigation with Aniq the whole time, possibly to keep track of whether the detectives consider him a suspect.” Yasper’s ideas to keep Aniq in on the investigation were all for selfish gain. Did Yasper even care about Aniq’s innocence at all? Or did he only care about his own innocence?

The season finale of The Afterparty was exactly what I wanted as a viewer: a great red herring fakeout, an Agatha Christie style reveal of the true killer, great humor, and a satisfying resolution. The Afterparty has already been renewed for a Season 2 on Apple TV+ where Tiffany Haddish will return as Detective Danner with a new supporting cast and a new case.
