On September 16th, 5 piece band Weston & The Evergreen released their new single Rearview Mirror, which is off their upcoming EP. This is the group’s first release since their album 22 Years Young, which was released in early 2020. Rearview Mirror is upbeat, enticing, and a great way to kick off the countdown to their EP release.
Lyrically, the track reminisces on how life ebbs and flows: from feeling on top of the world at 16, to throwing it all away in your 20s. The chorus begs “do you want to be in love?”, and feels like a desperate plea. The song follows the realization that time doesn’t stop passing by, and that there’s only a finite timespan to do things like finding love.
The highlight of this track is the way it builds: there are moments where the instrumentals cut out completely, and moments where they build in intensity (mainly from the pre chorus into the chorus). The instrumentals work cohesively with the lyrics in order to truly make the song feel like a journey. You can close your eyes and be instantly transported to cruising along the highway, reflecting on past memories and daydreaming about the future.
The dedication to the car theme doesn’t go unnoticed: the track begins with someone asking “seatbelts”? The cue for the listeners to buckle in for the ride. An engine revs right before the second pre-chorus, signifying the build up into the chorus. These sonic choices add to the immersion, and truly tie the lyrical themes and instrumental together to create a cohesive track.
Rearview Mirror is now available to stream on all streaming services, and you can follow Weston & The Evergreen on Instagram to keep up with their future releases.
