Une Nouvelle Chance by ascendant vierge: Album Review

France based duo (Paul Seul & Mathilde Fernandez)  ascendant vierge has returned with their first full length project since 2020— a 14 track album titled Une Nouvelle Chance. Producer Paul Seul and vocalist Mathilde Fernandez join forces to create an out of this world, genre bending tracklist that combine Seul’s dance-pop production with Fernandez’ gothic, operatic vocals. The project was started in 2020, in the midst of pandemic lockdown. The duo set out to create their own fusion of various genres with inspiration from genres like hyperpop and EDM.

The tracklist kicks off with ”IRL”, easing listeners into ascendant vierge’s sonic world with gentle guitar and Fernandez’ haunting vocals. Right as listeners are getting comfortable, the song bursts into a vibrant, bouncy dance beat. Fernandez’ vocals keep listeners engaged, a constant tether throughout the ever changing production. ascendant vierge wastes no time immersing you into their environment, allowing listeners to prepare for what’s in store as the tracklist continues.

We move swiftly through “Dedans” and “Je suis un avion”; tracks that are both seeping with dance pop influence. These could easily be slotted into any club DJ’s set, and the driving beats are guaranteed to fill up any dance floor. Arriving at the title track, “Une Nouvelle Chance”; the EDM inspired track includes a beat drop/breakdown that is sure to satisfy any hardcore EM fan. Fernandez’ vocals stand out on this track, floating beautifully over the driving beat.

“Au Top”, track 5, begins with soft vocals paired with a subtle piano backtrack, then bursts into a vibrant electronic beat, with the vocals taking on more of a chanting cadence. The switch between gentle and intense sections make it a highlight of the album. It’s dynamic, engaging, and truly a moment for Fernandez to prove herself vocally. Sitting in the middle of the tracklist, “Au Top” is one of the highest streamed songs from the project, earning a spot as a fan favorite.

“Lubies” and “Ce monde où tu n’existe pas” take on a slower tempo, feeling a bit more reflective than other songs on the project. But, the electronic production is still there, so there’s never a dull moment throughout.

Towards the end of the tracklist, there is a live version of “Petit Soldat.” that showcases Fernandez’ phenomenal vocals. You can feel the energy of their live performance through the recorded version. The decision to put it on the record was a smart one, as it allows listeners to experience the duo’s music in a different way.

Though at times the electropop beats feel a bit repetitive, the album is a cohesive work that highlights ascendant vierge’s ability to fuse various genres and influences to create their own unique sound. This duo is definitely one to watch, as they continue to grow their audience and craft their sonic space.
