renforshort gets vulnerable in her new song, “moshpit,” released on January 28th via Interscope Records. In this alt-pop ballad, she sings to a guitar-heavy track about a toxic relationship.
While “moshpit” may sound daunting by the name, ren sings softly, until the bridge of the song, where she screams from being at her breaking point in the relationship. The juxtaposition between the chaotic title and the rather quiet song brings an interesting dynamic to the track.
The lyrics, “If I take an elbow to the face one more time I think I’ll break/I don’t think that I’m a saint, but you’re hell,” perfectly reflects ren’s frustration in her relationship.
By using a moshpit as a metaphor for her toxic relationship, ren allows listeners to reflect on their past or current relationships that may have been toxic, which gives them something to relate to.
Since moshpits themselves can be fun for a while and then be exhausting, it was a unique metaphor for a relationship that turned sour.
Whether you need a song to let out your frustration to, or to belt out at a deep karaoke session, “moshpit” is a great song to add to your playlist.
