In Conversation with Conner: Life Is A Celebration

Conner brings nothing but good vibes to 2022 with his hit single, “Celebration,” featuring Landon Cube. Making life a celebration in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Conner enters the pop punk scene with a fresh sound that’ll give listeners a boost of serotonin. The song has recieved over 150,000 streams on Spotify and has been added to several New Music Friday playlists. The music video, directed by Sam McGrath (iann dior, Landon Cube) matched the vibes of the song perfectly, fun and optimistic.

I got the chance to chat with Conner about “Celebration” and how he got started making music.

IMANI: First off, congrats on the release of “Celebration”! I’ve seen a lot of positive responses about the song and music video! How do you feel about it all?

CONNER: Great! This was the first single on my upcoming EP and we put a lot of time into perfecting the song so I wanted to make sure the video was on that same level. Linked up with Sam for the video and he absolutely crushed it. Brought my vision to life and I think it matched the energy of the song really well.

I: How did you get started making music?

C: I’ve been actually making my own music for 10+ years now but have been around it my whole life. My uncle is a studio guitarist and gifted me my first guitar when I was 8. So it’s definitely something that has been in my family for years.

I: What was your writing and recording process like for “Celebration”?

C: I actually did a full demo of it with my homie Jeremy Schmetterer. He’s a really dope guitarist/producer that I work with often. He’s really good at taking my ideas and helping expand them. Then I took that demo to my main producer Kodeblooded and we amped everything up a lil bit. Left an open verse for Landon and he crushed it. Everything came together really easily on this one which made it an obvious choice for the lead single.

I: How did the collaboration with Landon Cube come about, and what was it like working with him?

C: We’re actually both from Maryland so I’d known about him and been a fan for years. We have a bunch of mutual friends out here in LA so it was bound to happen. Did another session with him a few months before the “celebration” session but nothing ever came of that idea until we linked again on this one. A lot of people know him for his rap stuff but he’s a super talented musician/producer as well.

I: Who else would you want to collaborate with this year?

C: I really don’t like working with people I don’t know. So it would have to be someone I’m friends with or cool with out here in LA. I’ve got some stuff in the works though we’ll see what happens.

I: What was your favorite scene to shoot from the “Celebration” music video?

C: The final party scenes were definitely the most fun. Confetti cannons going off everywhere, alcohol spilling all over the place, full band playing, it was sick. Took us 2 hours to clean it all up at the end. The guy I rented the location from told me it was the worst condition he’d ever seen the studio in during the 10 years he’s been doing this. They charged me a huge cleaning fee on top of my reservation too… definitely wasn’t too happy about that but it was all worth it.

I: Do you have any future singles, projects, or endeavors that we can look forward to?

C: EP top of the year. 5-6 songs I’m really proud of. Should be dope.
