Electro-funk group Franc Moody has released their first single of 2022, “Mass Appeal”. A dreamy concoction of funky basslines and bouncy synths, this track comes just in time to be your go-to song this summer.
Upon first listen, this song immediately gave me Gorillaz vibes. I’m not sure if it’s the vocals sounding vaguely Damon Albarn-esque, or the production style feeling reminiscent of The Now Now, but this track definitely feels like it could’ve been a Gorillaz B-Side. As a huge Gorillaz fan, there are obviously no complaints from me on that front.
This track feels a bit more experimental than Franc Moody’s previous work. The sound choices vary slightly from their other music, but it honestly works. They knew what vibe they were going for with “Mass Appeal”, and they nailed it. They veered a bit from what they’re familiar with, but they went in the right direction.
Seeing that the group is seemingly taking their music in a bit of a different direction, it’ll be exciting to see what’s in store for their future releases. But for now, you can join me in blasting “Mass Appeal” on repeat. Check it out here on Spotify!
