BETWEEN FRIENDS: “Really good cry” Track Review

Indie pop duo Between Friends (siblings Brandon and Savannah Hudson) had a whirlwind of a year in 2023: with the release of their debut album I Love My Girl, She’s My Boy and a North American tour, it was a monumental year for the two. To cap off a year full of accomplishments, the duo recently released their new single Really good cry.

Really good cry is the first release in a string of upcoming releases to support Between Friends’ debut album, which was released in August of 2023. It’s a shorter track, with a runtime of just shy under 2 minutes. But, don’t let that fool you into thinking this song doesn’t pack a punch – with melancholy, gentle verses, and a bursting chorus, Really good cry captures a wide spectrum of emotions.

The lyrics cover the complexities of caring about someone who doesn’t care for themselves. Experiencing your own feelings while still wishing the best for the other person is a difficult balancing act that many have experienced, whether it’s because of a break up, falling out with a friend, etc. “I just wanna try and be your friend when you’re ready,” urges Brandon in the second verse.

The verses and pre-chorus lyrically focus on the other person, explaining how they aren’t doing well and should “try to settle down.” With smooth melodic vocals and a simple drum pattern accompanying, the verses feel retrospective and a bit tranquil. Once the chorus arrives, the contrast is instant: a grittier, fuller sound paired with confessional lyrics that narrate, as the title suggests, a really good cry. The duality between sections creates an engaging dynamic that takes listeners through a range of feelings, all wrapped up into one short track.

With Really good cry released just as 2023 came to a close, Between Friends has cemented themselves as a group to watch in 2024. Based on how successful this past year was for the duo, there’s no doubt that they will continue to reach new heights throughout the new year.
